Chincoteague Wild Ponies

Assateague Island is home of the world famous "Chincoteague Wild Ponies".  These herds are the descendants of ones that grazed on the island as early as the 17th century.  The herds are separated at the Virginia and Maryland state line.  The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company maintains the Virginia herd while the Maryland herd is managed by the National Park Service.  The wild ponies can be seen from several nature trails on Assateague Island.

Assateague National Seashore

Assateague National Seashore, more affectionately known as "the beach", provides 37 miles of sandy beach along Assateague Island's shore.  Walk long enough and you are sure to find that perfect shell!  Swimming, surfing and lots of relaxing in the sun await you on Assateague National Seashore.  The beach does have life guards, in season, and a nearby visitor's center hosting a range of activities including guided walks and "touch" aquarium.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

You are sure to find a favorite trail amongst the many to walk, bike, hike and drive.  The 14,000 acres provide plenty of beach, dunes, marsh and maritime forest for your recreation.  Don't forget your camera, as there are plenty of wildlife, from egrets to ponies, posing picture perfect just for you.  The new interactive educational center provides many hands-on exhibits, a gift shop, and an auditorium for presentations and movies about local wildlife and interest.

Assateague Lighthouse

Built in 1933 along the shoreline of Assateague Island, the Assateague Lighthouse stands 154 feet above sea level.  The signature alternating strips of red and white and twin rotating lights can be seen from 19 miles out to sea.  The lighthouse grounds are accessible year round.  You can climb its steps to the top for a spectacular panoramic view of Chincoteague and Assateague Island one weekend a month from April through October.

Bird Watching

With over 300 species of migratory and resident birds, Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are one of America’s finest places to bird watch.  With natural marshes, lakes, and ponds, the area is now home to several types of protected birds including the bald eagle and the piping plover.  You are sure to spot many of them during your visit.  Make sure you bring your scopes, camcorders and cameras to capture those breathtaking moments.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Whether you want to learn to operate a canoe or kayak, or are already experienced, Chincoteague offers several outfitters that can provide you the gear and guide for a truly enriching expedition into the local wildlife around the shores of Assateague and Chincoteague.  Give us a call and we will be happy to recommend one of the local outfitters.

Cruise and Boat Tours

You are sure to find the perfect cruise and boat tour package here on Chincoteague.  The many fine captains will provide you with spectacular views and unique photographic opportunities to remember your stay.  Choose from pony tours, flounder fishing trips, bird watching tours, sunset lighthouse cruises, and romantic cruises around both islands.   Give us a call for a recommendation of one of the local companies.

Fishing Charters

Create your own fishing story here on the waters amongst the islands.  There are several charter companies that can help create that experience.  Whether you want to fish for flounder, sea trout, bluefish, croaker, kingfish, sea bass, spot or other game fish, Chincoteague is one of the best locations on the East Coast to bring your fishing rod.
